Sales tops the list, not engineering

Across the 598 postings we track today, spanning 20 Canadian employers hiring directly through their own career pages, Sales is the largest single category with 159 postings — more than any other. That edges out Engineering at 143, which is the category most readers would expect to sit at the top given how many of the employers in our catalogue are technology companies.

The gap narrows further down the list. Data & AI holds 116 postings, a striking number on its own, reflecting how thoroughly AI and data roles have spread into companies that aren't primarily AI companies. Retail & Store Sales adds another 73, which combined with the 159 in Sales proper and the 36 in Account Executive and 22 in Sales Development means commercial and retail roles together dwarf any single engineering discipline.

Engineering is fragmented, not small

Engineering's 143 is itself a headline category that bundles together disciplines the catalogue also tracks separately: Backend (56), Full-Stack (23), DevOps & SRE (23), Security Engineering (23), ML Engineering & Infrastructure (43), Data Engineering (31), and Systems & Low-Level (12). Add those specialized engineering categories to the general Engineering count and the technical side of the catalogue is clearly enormous — it's just split across many labels rather than concentrated in one, which is why Sales appears to lead when categories are compared one-to-one.

Hardware & Semiconductors posts 31 openings, with related categories Silicon & Chip Design (17), Electrical & PCB Design (6) and Hardware Systems & Test (6) showing that chip work is a real, if smaller, slice of the catalogue — likely tied to a single major employer.

Product, marketing and money round things out

Product sits at 59, Marketing at 57, and Growth Marketing separately at 50 — together suggesting marketing-adjacent hiring (107 combined) rivals product work. Operations posts 45, and finance-related work is split between Finance & Accounting (39), Accounting & Audit (19), and Risk, Credit & Banking (16), adding up to 74 postings once combined — comparable in size to Retail & Store Sales.

Customer-facing categories outside Sales are meaningful too: Customer Success (32) and Customer Support (32) post identical counts, while Solutions & Sales Engineering adds 21 more hybrid technical-sales roles.

Two employers account for a third of everything

The employer breakdown explains some of this shape. Neo Financial posts 94 openings and Cohere posts 93 — together 187 of the 598 postings, or roughly a third of the entire catalogue, from just two of the 20 companies tracked. Tenstorrent follows with 53, then Instacart with 51 and Wealthsimple with 39.

Neo Financial, a fintech, likely drives much of the Sales, Account Executive, and Risk, Credit & Banking volume. Cohere, an AI company, is a plausible source for a large share of the 116 Data & AI postings and the 103 postings requiring Machine Learning as a skill. Tenstorrent's hardware focus lines up with the Hardware & Semiconductors and Silicon & Chip Design categories.

At the other end, Rewind lists just 2 open postings and Thinkific just 3, a reminder that this catalogue's category totals are shaped as much by which employers happen to be hiring aggressively right now as by broader demand.

The skills confirm the pattern

The most-required skills list reinforces the sales-plus-technical story. Sales Enablement appears in 115 postings and Outbound Prospecting in 104, both near the top of the list — consistent with Sales being the largest category. Meanwhile Python appears in 138 postings and Machine Learning in 103, the two most in-demand technical skills, matching the size of the Data & AI category.

Account Management shows up in 77 postings and Negotiation in 57, both clearly sales-adjacent, while Product Management appears in 112 — nearly as many as Python — showing that product skills are sought well beyond the 59 postings formally labelled Product.

One more note on the catalogue overall: only 11 of the 598 postings state a salary range at all, so category and skill counts remain the most reliable signal this data can offer about where hiring is concentrated right now.
